Julie Pilitsis, the Dean of the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, says that Florida is currently short about 2,000 doctors. She also says that the average wait time to see a doctor in Florida is about 30 days and that in an ideal world, the wait time should be no more than five days. To try to fix this problem, FAU plans to increase its med school class size from 72 graduates each year up to 104.
The current doctor shortage in Florida is having a negative impact on residents across the state. When people are sick or injured and need to see a doctor, they often have to wait weeks or even months for an appointment. This can obviously cause a lot of stress and anxiety, not to mention further health complications. That’s why it’s so great to hear that FAU is increasing its med school class size in order to help alleviate this shortage.
Of course, it will take several years before the full effects of this decision are felt. The class size will be increased gradually, with eight additional students being admitted each year until they reach the 104 mark. Nevertheless, it’s still a step in the right direction and will hopefully help reduce those long wait times for appointments. If you live in South Florida, there’s a good chance that you or someone you know has been affected by the doctor shortage. So let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this plan by FAU comes to fruition and helps as many people as possible!
It’s great to see that FAU is taking steps to try and alleviate the doctor shortage in Florida. With so many people having to wait weeks or even months for appointments, it’s clear that something needs to be done. Hopefully increasing the med school class size will help attract more qualified applicants and eventually lead to shorter wait times for patients across the state.
