This season, the theater will be presenting Anything Goes, Cole Porter’s popular musical comedy from 1934. The Show Must Go On!
At the Wick, no detail is too small when it comes to producing a show as beloved as Anything Goes. Preparations began months ahead of time in order to make sure that everything was perfect on opening night. From sourcing costumes and props made in the 1930s style, to hiring actors and musicians with just the right chemistry—all of these elements are essential in bringing classic shows like Anything Goes back to life on stage.
The cast has been working hard during rehearsals since they started in June. The actors have had plenty of help getting into character; director Hunter Bird regularly takes them out for ice cream after rehearsal so that they can bond over their shared love for theater. In addition to Bird, choreographer Jessica Janacek leads an intense dance routine practice twice a week in order for each actor to master their steps before taking the stage at the Wick theatre.
The show features a live orchestra directed by music director Paul Reekie, who has been playing piano since he was four years old! He has put together an impressive team of musicians who play everything from brass instruments like trumpets and trombones, to wind instruments like flutes and clarinets, plus percussion instruments such as drums and xylophones. Rehearsals began several weeks ago and have been going smoothly since then; Reekie ensures that everyone knows their part before each performance by having them run through pieces multiple times until they are perfect.
